ScrollCue vs CuePrompter.
CuePrompter scrolls text and nothing else. That is not a criticism, it is the product. Here is where that runs out.
Free plan · No download · No account · Nothing uploaded
CuePrompter is a free browser teleprompter that scrolls text at a fixed speed with no sections, presenter notes, recording, or remote control. ScrollCue is also free with no account but adds sections, markup, presenter notes, and theming, plus Pro recording, Voice Follow, and multi-device Event Mode.
What CuePrompter gets right
It has been the default free recommendation for years and it deserved to be. No account, loads instantly, does what it says. If you need text to move down a screen at a speed you pick, it is a completely reasonable answer and it will still be there in ten years.
Where it runs out
Fixed speed is also the ceiling. You set a number in advance and then have to talk at that number, which nobody is good at. There are no sections, so if you fluff a line halfway through a long script you either restart or go hunting. There are no presenter notes, no remote, no recording, and no concept of a second device.
None of that is a flaw. It is a different product. But it means that the moment your work gets even slightly more complicated, CuePrompter is not a simpler version of the right tool, it is the wrong tool.

Moving over takes about a minute
Select your text in CuePrompter, copy it, paste it into ScrollCue. There is no export, no file format, and no import step. If your script has parts, put two hash marks before each heading and you now have jump points, which is probably the single biggest quality-of-life change you will notice.
When to stay put
One short read, one fixed pace, nothing else needed. A quick announcement. A toast. If that is genuinely the job, CuePrompter is fine and you should not switch tools for the sake of it.
Frequently asked questions
Is ScrollCue a free CuePrompter alternative?
Yes. The core prompter is free with no account, same as CuePrompter, and adds sections, markup, presenter notes, and theming on top.
What is the biggest difference?
Sections and voice-paced scrolling. CuePrompter runs at a speed you guessed in advance and gives you no way to jump around a long script. Both of those become a problem the moment a script has parts.
How do I move my script over?
Copy it and paste it. There is no import step and no file format to convert.
Is CuePrompter still worth using?
For a single short read at a fixed pace, yes. It is free and it works.
