Elgato Camera Hub not working — how to fix it.

Frozen preview, a hub that won't open, or a camera that works in one app and not another. Here is what actually causes it and what to try, roughly in order of how often each one is the culprit.

Quick answer

Elgato Camera Hub problems are usually one of four things: the Facecam is on a USB 2.0 port or a faulty cable, another app already has exclusive access to the camera, a competing virtual camera driver is installed, or Camera Hub itself is out of date. Quit and restart Camera Hub from the tray icon first, then check the USB connection, then check for other software holding the camera.

Start here before anything else

    Quit Camera Hub completely, not just close the window

    Find the Camera Hub icon in the system tray (Windows) or menu bar (Mac) — on Windows it may be hidden behind the small upward arrow next to the clock. Right-click it and choose Quit Camera Hub, then reopen it. This alone fixes a surprising number of freezes.

    Check for updates

    Right-click the same tray or menu bar icon and choose Check for Updates. Camera Hub has shipped several point releases fixing specific freezes and crashes, so if you have not updated in a while there is a reasonable chance your exact bug is already patched.

    Restart the computer

    Not the app, the machine. USB controllers and camera drivers can get into a state a software restart does not clear. Do this before spending time on anything more involved below.

If it still isn't working

The USB connection

  • The Facecam needs a genuine USB 3.0 port. On most desktop motherboards these have a blue interior, though some boards use red or yellow instead.
  • Front-panel and hub ports are the most common culprits. Plug directly into a rear motherboard port if you can.
  • Try a different USB cable. A damaged or low-quality cable can connect enough to show up in your system but not enough to stream video reliably.
  • Unplug other USB devices sharing the same hub or controller and test again with just the camera connected.

Another app has the camera

  • Most webcams only allow one application to access them at a time. If Zoom, Teams, OBS, or a browser tab already grabbed the camera, Camera Hub can fail to open it or show a frozen frame.
  • Close every other app that might be using the camera, quit Camera Hub, then reopen it first before opening anything else.
  • If you want exposure, focus, or framing settings to show up while using the Facecam inside OBS or Zoom, Camera Hub needs to be running in Compact Mode rather than fully closed. Closing it entirely can be why settings you set once do not seem to stick.

Driver conflicts

  • Other virtual camera software installed on the same machine — other webcam utilities, background-removal tools, or a different manufacturer's camera driver — can register itself in a way that breaks Camera Hub's access to the Facecam.
  • Open Device Manager on Windows, expand Cameras, and look for anything unfamiliar sitting alongside your Facecam entry. Disabling or uninstalling a conflicting driver has fixed this for plenty of people.
  • Overlay or performance-monitoring software (the kind that hooks into games and capture devices) has also been known to interfere. If you run something like that, try disabling it for Camera Hub specifically and test again.

USB controller drivers

  • Install the latest USB 3.x controller drivers from your motherboard or laptop manufacturer's own site, not just Windows Update.
  • Some chipsets, notably certain Intel controllers, don't have separately installable drivers and rely on Microsoft's built-in ones — if that's your setup, a Windows Update check is the relevant step instead.
  • Restart after any driver install. This is where a lot of driver fixes silently fail to apply.

Last resort: reinstall

Uninstall Camera Hub completely, restart the computer, then download and install the current version fresh from Elgato's site rather than an old installer you may have saved. A clean install clears out corrupted preference files and settings caches that a normal update sometimes leaves behind.

If you got here trying to record or stream

If the whole reason you're fighting with Camera Hub is to get a clean webcam feed for recording or streaming, it's worth knowing you don't need it running at all for a simple talking-head setup. A browser-based approach that puts your live camera behind your script skips the capture-card layer entirely for anything that isn't a dedicated production rig.

Why is Camera Hub not detecting my Facecam?
