The Fire tablet problem
Fire tablets are cheap, the screen is fine, and they are exactly the sort of thing you would happily leave clamped to a pulpit or a desk permanently. The catch is the Amazon Appstore, which does not have the app you want, and the Play Store, which is not there.
The usual advice is to sideload Google Play, which involves several APKs, a leap of faith, and a device that may or may not still boot afterwards. You do not need to do any of that.
Just use the browser
A Fire tablet has a browser. ScrollCue runs in it. That is the whole solution, and it is slightly annoying how much time people spend on the sideloading route before someone tells them.
Add it to the home screen and it will launch on its own and work offline, which is functionally identical to having installed an app, without the part where you void your warranty.
A Fire tablet as a permanent booth screen
This is where they genuinely shine. Cheap enough to leave mounted, big enough to read, and if it gets dropped nobody cries. A Fire tablet on a pulpit stand, or as a confidence monitor at the front of a stage, is one of the best value-per-pound decisions in church AV, and it will run for years.
