A sermon is not a script to be performed
Most congregations can tell when it is, and it reads as less sincere rather than more polished. So the goal here is different from scripting a video. You want the scripture accurate, the transitions unfumbled, and the close landing exactly where you intended it, while everything between stays personal and a little loose.
Script this in full
- Scripture references and direct quotes, where accuracy actually matters
- The opening line, which sets everything that follows
- The closing call to action, which is too important to improvise at the end of forty minutes
- Any announcement or housekeeping either side of the message
Leave this as headings
- The body of the message, three to five points you expand as you go
- Personal stories, which land far better unscripted
- Anything you want to be led into rather than read from
Practical things that matter from a pulpit
Go bigger than you think
Stage lighting and reading distance both work against you. 60 to 72 px is a reasonable place to start on a tablet at pulpit distance, and you will probably go up from there.
Put references in presenter notes
If you want the reference visible but do not want to read it out word for word, wrap it in double square brackets. It floats above the script for you and nobody else.
Sections mean you can circle back
Mark each point with ## and you can return to something you want to revisit, without losing where you were.
Paste your existing notes
If you already preach from an outline, paste that outline straight in. There is no need to rewrite it into a script you did not want in the first place.
